LEXINGTON ? For the first time in third-year head coach Mo Muhammad?s tenure, the University of Kentucky gymnastics squad recorded a Southeastern Conference dual meet victory. The No. 15 Cats (4-0) defeated No. 9 Auburn (2-5), 194.975-192.800, Friday night at Memorial Coliseum. Junior Krystle Cook led the way with victories on bars and floor exercise.
?I could not be prouder of our team,? Muhammad said emphatically. ?It is extremely tough to win against an SEC school. We still have some things to work on, but overall, I think we are at a good point this early in the season.?
UK started the meet with a strong showing on vault, highlighted by three 9.8s or better. Senior Lucy Burgin finished second and tied a career-high with a 9.850.
On bars, Cook led Kentucky with a 9.825 followed by Burgin?s 9.8. After two rotations, Kentucky held a slim lead of 97.250-97.100 over the Tigers.
The Cats increased their team lead with a team score of 48.775 on beam. Junior Rachel Riley and freshman Heather Hite were UK?s fifth and sixth competitors respectively, both registering 9.825s.
With the meet still in doubt, Kentucky need a solid showing on floor and got just that. Riley and Hite both notched 9.8s while Cook won the event with a 9.875.
Auburn was led by Julie Dwyer who won the all-around competition with a score of 39.225.
Kentucky scored better than its season averages on every event except floor exercise.
The meet marked the 49th meeting between the two schools with Kentucky now leading 25-24.
Up next, Kentucky travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on North Carolina, Sun., Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. ET.
