The Kentucky men?s tennis team had a strong first day of singles competition at the Southeastern Conference Indoor Championships Friday at the Lexington Tennis Club. Five of the six Cats in action won their first round singles matches.
Kentucky?s highest ranked player No. 48 Bruno Agostinelli defeated Mississippi State?s Jose Carlos Pinto in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
No. 61 Alex Hume also advanced in straight sets. The 8th-seeded senior defeated Alabama?s Mathieu Thibaudeau 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Nate Emge rebounded from an opening set lost to advance to the second round. The 83rd-ranked Emge rallied to beat LSU?s Paul White 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Senior Carey Rubin and Marcus Sundh also collected victories on the opening day of the tournament. Rubin claimed his first set 6-4, dropped his second set 3-6, before rebounding to defeat the 14th-seeded Bram ten Berge of Ole Miss in the final set 6-4 to win the match. Sundh advanced past Auburn?s Alex Schweizer, the tournament?s 15th-seed, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Greg Anderson appearing in his second collegiate tournament fell to Ole Miss? Jakob Klaeson 6-4, 6-4.
Doubles action was continuing into the night and full results will be posted on ukathletics.com Saturday morning.
Saturday will mark the first day both singles and doubles action will be taking place at the Lexington Tennis Club and at the Hilary J. Boone Center beginning at 10 a.m. The Boone Center will host all matches on Sunday and Monday with the finals at 2 p.m. on Monday.
Fans are reminded that admission to this weekend?s matches at both sites will be free. Fans are encouraged to use the new parking structure adjacent to the Boone Tennis Stadium. Parking will cost $2.00 for the first hour, $2.00 for the second hour and then $1.00 for every hour after that with a $10.00 maximum fee to park.
