The Kentucky women?s tennis team was back in action Friday at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Cats notched a pair of victories on the first day of competition. Freshman Carolina Pinilla, a native of Medellin, Columbia, defeated Alexis Conhill of No. 6 Northwestern in straight sets 6-3, 6-1, in her first collegiate match. Paniilla dropped her second round match to No. 4 seed Whitney Benik of Florida 6-1, 6-1.

Junior Joelle Schwenk rebounded from an opening set loss to defeat UCLA?s Ashley Joelson 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. The Coconut Creek, Fla., native fell in her second round match to tournament No. 2 seed Alexis Prousis of Northwestern 7-5, 7-5.

In other first round action against players from the top teams in the nation, the Cats? Kim Coventry lost to Petra Dizdar of Texas 6-3, 6-1. Senior Danielle Petrisko exited against tournament No. 1 seed Diana Srebrovic of Florida in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. Junior Lara Maurer also fell in straight sets to Stanford?s Whitney Deason 6-2, 6-3.

Rounding out the Cats play was junior Liis Sober who dropped her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, to Northwestern?s Jamie Peisel. Junior Caroline Winebrenner also lost to the No. 6 seed Kendra Strohm of Texas 6-2, 6-0.
