LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky men?s soccer team scored early and often en route to a stunningly easy 4-1 victory over UAB on a rainy Sunday at the UK Soccer Complex.
The win improves UK to 6-6-4 on the year and 3-4-1 in Conference USA. The Wildcats have 10 points in the league with one game remaining and have all but assured themselves a spot in the conference tournament. The game came on the heels of a devastating 2-1 overtime loss to Memphis on Friday.
The Blazers entered the game in second place in the conference, but fell to 8-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the league.
?Nobody was discouraged after Friday and everybody drove forward,? Kentucky coach Ian Collins said. ?They came out and beat UAB, who is a quality team. They have a lot of good players and are well-coached.?
The margin of victory was reflective of the dominating performance UK put forth. The Wildcats put half their shots on goal and held a 7-2 shot advantage through the first half. Only a flurry of shots in the game?s final minutes allowed the Blazers to reach double-figures in shots in the contest. Kentucky took nine corners to just one for UAB.
?I thought we just hammered them into the ground,? Collins said. ?We played really well and probably could have had five or six goals. We turned the corner and finished our chances.?
Michael D?Agostino opened the floodgates in the 15th minute with a tremendous strike for his second goal of the year. He took the kick from 25 yards out, cracked it over the wall and banked it off the crossbar and in.
?What a strike by Michael,? Collins said. ?He played a great game and the goal was fantastic.?
Senior Brandon Stewart scored the eventual game-winner in the 35th minute. He took a header from sophomore Michael Strong just inside the 18 and dribbled past goalkeeper A.J. Robles for the goal. It was the fourth game-winning goal in Stewart?s career, which is tied for eighth most all time.
Strong added a second assist in the 76th minute when he set up freshman Travis Young?s first career goal. Strong dribbled in from the right flank and fed Young in front, where he buried the shot to give UK a three-goal advantage.
Young added a second goal in the 86th minute after a pair of great passes set him up with an great opportunity. Freshman Jess Mitchell played a great through ball to fellow freshman Brad Frederick down the left side. Frederick eluded one defender and forced the keeper off his line before feeding Young for the goal.
It was the first assist for both Mitchell and Frederick this year.
?A lot of teams, especially with so many young players would have folded tent after Friday,? Collins said. ?But that?s never going to happen here. Our young guys stepped up and played great.?
The final margin was realized when Shane Elsner buried a penalty kick after Thomas Senecal committed a foul in the box.
