LEXINGTON ? With less than a minute left in overtime, Michael Coburn buried a header to lift Memphis to a 2-1 victory over Kentucky on Friday night at the UK Soccer Complex.
The win improved the Tigers to 6-5-2 this year and 2-2-2 in Conference USA. Meanwhile, the Wildcats fell to 5-6-4 and 2-4-1 in the league.
The game-winning play developed down the right flank of the field and Andy Metcalf found himself with the ball inside the box on the right side. He clipped it to the far post where Coburn got a head on it to beat Kentucky keeper Andy Gruenebaum.
It wrapped up a close game that saw each team fire 14 shots, although UK got six on goal to just four for the Tigers. The Wildcats also forced seven corners, including four in overtime.
Memphis, the defending Conference USA champion, got on the board first in the 55th minute on an unassisted goal by Jared Britcher. On one of the Tigers three corners, the ball came loose and Britcher outjumped the UK defense to head it in. It was his second shot on the sequence, the first of which was blocked just seconds before.
Less than two minutes later, Matt Baum scored the equalizer for Kentucky on a goal that looked exactly like the eventual winner. Nathan Marks sent the ball in from the right side where Travis Young crossed it to the back post. Standing 6-2, Baum easily jumped above the Memphis defense to bury the header.
It was Baum?s second goal of the year, both of which have come in 2-1 UK losses.
The Wildcats had a flurry of opportunities in the overtime as they forced three corners in under a minute. However, they were unable to capitalize on the opportunities and eventually lost minutes later.
The meeting was the first for the two teams since 1992 and just the second overall. Memphis leads the series, 2-1.
Kentucky returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. when it hosts UAB, which currently stands in second place in the league standings.
