The University of Kentucky and the University of Florida will co-host the seventh annual Gary Koch Invitational, Oct. 10-11 at Old Memorial Golf Club in Tampa, Fla.
Freshmen Andy Winings, Ben Fuqua and Dan Woltman, sophomore Brad Doster, and senior Matt Kohn make up the lineup for the Wildcats this week.
The Gary Koch Invitational is named after former Gator and PGA Tour player Gary Koch, who was part of Florida’s 1973 team that won the NCAA Championship. He went on to a fruitful career on the PGA Tour, where he earned over $2.4-million during a 26-year playing career. Koch continues to split his time on the Champions Tour and as a broadcast with NBC Sports.
Kentucky won last year’s tournament by recording scores of 297-280-295 = 872 (+8) at Old Memorial Golf Club. Former Wildcat Mark Blakefield won the individual honors with a 70-69-74 = 213 (-3).
For the first time in its seven-year history, the field for the Gary Koch Invitational was narrowed to 12 teams. The change was made as a precaution for inclement weather. Although the tournament field is smaller, the geographic range of this year’s field has expanded vastly. Teams from eight different states will compete in the tournament, including Texas A&M and Toledo.
?This is a tournament that we co-host with the Florida. It?s a great course and we?re defending champions,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?I feel pretty good about this team. We?re on the right track, but we?re still awful young. It will be fun to go down there and see if we can defend our title against a great field.?
The Golf Channel will air highlights from the event during College Central, on Thursday Oct. 13 at 10:30 p.m.
