Kentucky outside hitter Ashlee Fisher was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for volleyball, the league announced Monday. It was the first such honor for the 5-11 newcomer from West Bend, Wisc.

?Ashlee had a great weekend for us and continues to grow and improve every day,? UK Coach Craig Skinner said. ?She remained composed and poised against a tough Florida squad yesterday and that?s the type of play we need from her each match in this tough league.?

Fisher had 23 kills on .316 hitting in last weekend?s two SEC road matches. She had 11 kills on .296 hitting and three digs as UK swept the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens. It was UK?s first sweep of UGA since Oct. 4, 1996. Fisher followed with 12 kills, eight of which came in the third game, on .333 hitting at No. 5 Florida Sunday.

Fisher is averaging 2.86 kpg, 0.33 dpg and 0.23 bpg for the 9-5 Wildcats. She has tallied double-figure kills six times this year, including three of the last four matches.

This is the first year that the SEC has recognized a Freshman of the Week, making this the first such honor for Fisher.

Kentucky, which has opened league play with a 2-2 record, returns home on Friday, Oct. 7 to face Arkansas at 7 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum.
