ORLANDO, Fla. ? The Kentucky men?s soccer team continues its road swing on Sunday when it faces Central Florida at 1 p.m. at the UCF So.ccer Complex.
Both teams are coming off a tie Friday night in their Conference USA openers. The Wildcats held off Florida International to notch a 1-1 draw. Brandon Stewart (Dallas, Texas/Creekview) scored for UK on a header in the 26th minute. However, the Golden Panthers tallied the equalizer on a penalty kick in the second half.
Kentucky goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley North) was stellar in the game. He kept the Wildcats in the contest with 11 saves, which is tied for the fifth most in UK history.
?I thought we played well against a very good FIU team,? said Kentucky coach Ian Collins. ?We got an unlucky break on the penalty call, but still had chances to win in the second half. I think it was a good result for us in our first Conference USA game.?
In the game, the Florida heat was a factor as a number of Wildcats players suffered from cramps during the contest.
?These are tough conditions to play in that we aren?t used to,? Collins said. ?We?ve taken a day off to let our players rest and I am confident we?ll be ready to go.?
The tie was the third straight for Kentucky, to set a school record. It was also the fourth straight overtime game for the Wildcats.
Meanwhile, the Golden Knights scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation on Friday to rally for a 4-4 tie against Marshall. Trailing 4-1, UCF got a goal from Jermaine Walters and two from Jon Inman to complete the comeback.
?Seeing what UCF did on Friday, we understand that we have to play well the entire game,? Collins said. ?It will be a test of our fitness and where we are as a team.?
It is the third time the two teams have met. In 1995, Kentucky scored a 2-0 victory over the Golden Knights in Orlando. In the last meeting, the teams fought to a 1-1 draw in 2003 in the UK Invitational.
