The University of Kentucky women?s soccer team played its school-record sixth double overtime contest of the season tonight, a 1-1 tie at Alabama. The Wildcats move to 5-0-6 on the year and 1-0-2 in the Southeastern Conference, while Alabama goes to 6-2-2 with a 0-1-2 mark in league play.
The Wildcats are now winless in 13 straight overtime contests and increase their unbeaten streak to 11. They remain the lone unbeaten team in the SEC.
The Wildcats scored first as freshman Nicola Holdsworth found the back of the net off a corner kick by Kristen Jedlo during the 41st minute to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. The goal was Holdsworth?s fourth of the year, which ties her for tops on the team along with Sarah Gaunt, Courtney McCrudden and Kate Hughes.
The Kentucky 1-0 halftime lead was the first time Alabama has trailed at the break all year. The Tide outshot UK in the opening frame, 8-7, while the Cats led 4-2 in corner kicks in the first period. UK has scored first in eight of their eleven matches and own a 5-0-3 record in those games.
Alabama tied the score at 1-1 early in the second half as Cally Morrill headed a corner kick from Jessica Deegan during the 54th minute.
The Wildcats had three shots in the first extra frame to just one for the Crimson Tide. One shot by Jedlo with five seconds remaining would have been the game-winner for UK, but the goal was erased by a controversial offsides call.
In the second OT, Alabama managed a pair of shots to just one by Kentucky. UK keeper Anne Ogundele saved a shot on goal in the final second of the match to keep the 1-1 tie in tact. Ogundele finished with eight saves on the night.
The Cats return to action Sunday, Oct. 2, when they head to Auburn to take on the Tigers. Game time is set for 3 p.m. EST at the Auburn Soccer complex.
