LEXINGTON ? The Kentucky men?s soccer team attempts to tie the school record with its seventh straight home victory when it faces Western Michigan on Friday night at 5 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats? streak dates back to an Oct. 15, 2004 victory over Bowling Green and includes wins over rivals Cincinnati and Louisville. During the streak, Kentucky has outscored opponents 14-1 while recording five straight shutouts, which is the longest such run in school annals. The Wildcats have held opponents without a goal in the last 554:11 of action at home.
It is the second year in a row UK has approached a record based on home success. Between 2003-04, Kentucky broke the school record with a home unbeaten streak of 10, going 8-0-2 in the span.
The game will be a chance for the Wildcats to exact a measure of revenge. Last year, Western Michigan ended Kentucky?s season with a 1-0 victory on an own goal in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Earlier in the year, UK had routed the Broncos, 3-0.
The series has been a one-sided one as the Wildcats had won 12 straight in before falling a year ago. Kentucky is 4-0 at home against the Broncos, including a wild 5-4 double-overtime victory in 1998.
The Wildcats will be without the services of head coach Ian Collins, assistant coach Matt Wilkerson and midfielder Alex McDonald for the contest. All three were awarded red cards in UK?s 1-0 overtime loss to No. 28 Michigan on Sunday and are required to sit out one game.
The game is part of a doubleheader with the women?s team, which opens Southeastern Conference play against LSU at 7:30 p.m.
