The University of Kentucky women?s soccer team looks for its fourth straight win this Friday, Sept. 9, when it hosts Cincinnati. The match is set for a 7:30 p.m. start at the UK Soccer Complex.
The Wildcats are unbeaten this season with a 3-0-1 record and have won three straight matches, including a 7-1 win over Bellarmine in their last outing. With that win, head coach Warren Lipka stands just two wins shy of his 150th career victory with an overall record of 148-107-16 during his 14 years at UK.
The Wildcats and Bearcats have battled 11 times, with Kentucky holding a 6-5-0 record in those contests. UK has won three of the five matches played in Lexington. Last season, UK topped UC, 3-0, in the first match in the newly-renovated Gettler Stadium.
The Bearcats are currently 1-2-1 on the year after falling at Dayton in their last match. UC battled to a double overtime 2-2 tie against No. 10 Ohio State earlier this month and shutout Michigan State 1-0 on Aug. 28 for their lone win of the year.
UK freshman Kate Hughes leads the team with four goals after turning the fourth hat trick in school history on Tuesday night against Bellarmine. Hughes joins Cheryl Shimovetz and Annie Gage as the third different player in UK history to score three times in a game. Sophomore Sarah Gaunt has scored three times for the Cats, while freshman Nicola Holdsworth and sophomore Callie Lanphier each have two goals this season.
UK has scored first in every match this season and has yet to allow a first-half goal by any opponent. The offense has outshot opponents 110-19, including a 51-4 margin in the first half.
?Cincinnati is one of our strongest opponents so far this season and it will be a test our team,? said Lipka. ?Our defense had played well this season. We need to continue to play clean, solid defense and finish in the box on the offensive side.?
