The Kentucky women?s soccer team remained unbeaten and won its second straight match after defeating Miami of Ohio (0-2) by a final score of 2-0 at the UK Soccer Complex. The Wildcats are now 2-0-1 on the year after recording their second shutout in as many games.
A pair of underclassmen did the offensive damage for the Cats as sophomore Sarah Gaunt and freshman Nicola Holdsworth recorded a pair of second half goals. Gaunt broke up the scoreless match during the 82nd minute on a feed from Holdsworth to put the Cats up 1-0.
The freshman from Centerville, Ohio, followed with more heroics as she scored the first goal of her collegiate career during the 83rd minute after a scramble in front of the goal to give Kentucky the 2-0 advantage.
The UK defense did not allow a Miami shot until the 73rd minute when Lindsay Dunmead?s attempt sailed high over the Kentucky goal.
The Wildcats controlled the ball once again in the opening period, outshooting the Redhawks 7-0 in the first half. UK recorded seven corner kicks in the half, while Miami had just one.
UK had just one real scoring opportunity in the first half when Kelsey Fenix and Kate Hughes had back-to-back shots but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Cats outshot the Redhawks by a final tally of 20-2, giving them a 76-14 differential for the season.
?This was another good defensive performance by our team, but I think we still have a few holes to fill in that area,? said head coach Warren Lipka. ?We did a good job attacking again but we need to make the best of our chances. We created a lot but we didn?t have them on frame and that?s what we need to take care of.?
The Wildcats return to action Tuesday night, Sept. 6, when they host Bellarmine in a 7:30 p.m. start at the UK Soccer Complex.
