The Kentucky Wildcats posted a second-round score of 292 to bring their two-day total to 580 (288-292) and plant them in a three-way tie for fifth place at the NCAA Central Region in South Bend, Ind.
UK is tied with Texas (290-290) and Wichita State (298-282) for fifth place in the 27-team field, while Oklahoma State leads the team standings with a score of 565 (282-283). Augusta State ranks second at 568 (284-284), while Missouri (578) and Purdue (479) round out the top five at second and third place, respectively.
Oklahoma State?s Pablo Martin leads the individual standings, shooting even par on Friday after a five-under 65 in the first round to give him a total of 135. But it was UK senior Mark Blakefield who provided the fireworks on day two as he sank a hole-in-one on the 14th hole, driving the ball 213-yards with a 4-iron. In addition to the ace, Blakefield birdied three holes to finish with a 74 (+4) and a two-day total of 146 (74-72). He is tied for 40th overall as the Cats enter the final round on Saturday.
Senior Matt Wells leads the Cats and is tied for ninth overall after he collected five birdies and fired a team-best 68 in the second round to bring his two-day total to 141. The two-under-par 68 was one stroke shy of Wells? career-low. Only Missouri?s Ben Scott (71-67) and Lamar?s Dawie VanDer Walt (77-67) had a better performance in Friday?s second round.
Senior Brandon Waldrop also recorded five birdies on the day and matched his first-round score of 71, giving him a two-round score of 142. Waldrop is now tied for 11th in the individual standings. Junior Matt Kohn carded a 79 on the second day of play after firing an opening-round 72 to give him a total score of 151. Senior John Holmes wraps up the scores for Kentucky as he posted a score of 79 in the second round after shooting a 75 on Thursday afternoon.
The top 10 teams and top two individuals (not on an advancing team) from each of the three regional competitions will move on to the NCAA Championships June 1-4 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
Play concludes Saturday at the Warren Golf Course on the Notre Dame campus. The Wildcats are set to tee off at 7:30 a.m., along with Texas and Wichita State.
