Men's Golf

The University of Kentucky men?s golf team will attempt to repeat its performance from last season when it heads to the Central Region this week, May 19-21, in South Bend, Ind. The Cats won the Central a season ago before finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships.

The Wildcats, who are ranked 11th in the nation, will play the 54-hole tournament at the par-70 Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind.

Oklahoma State, Augusta State (Ga.) and Texas Christian are seeded 1-2-3, while UK is seeded fourth in the 27-team field. The top 10 finishers advance to the NCAA Championships, June 1-4, in Baltimore, Md.

Seniors John Holmes, Mark Blakefield, Matt Wells and Brandon Waldrop and junior Matt Kohn will tee it up for UK.

?We?re excited to defend our championship from last year,? head coach Brian Craig said. ?This is the biggest tournament of the year in terms of having to step up and play well to advance to the NCAA in a couple weeks.

?I like the experience that this team has and I feel pretty confident we?ll play well,? said Craig. ?We?re going out there to play to win, not just qualify. I think we?re ready and we?re prepared to compete this week.?

The Cats will tee off at 11:33 a.m. on Thursday and begin play at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. Tee times for Saturday will be determined by team standings through the first 36 holes of play. Live scoring will be available at ukathletics.com.
