Matthew Mitchell, assistant women?s basketball coach at the University of Kentucky, has resigned at UK in order to accept the head coaching position at Morehead State University, coach Mickie DeMoss has announced.
Mitchell came to UK in April 2003 and spent two seasons with the Wildcats where he was a key factor in the development and improvement of UK?s post players. Under his guidance, freshman center Sarah Elliott ranked in the top 10 in two Southeastern Conference rankings and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. Junior forward Jennifer Humphrey, who missed most of her sophomore season due to an illness, flourished under Mitchell?s guidance, leading the team in rebounding and ranking 15th in SEC rebounding. As the recruiting coordinator, Mitchell also helped bring in the nation?s sixth-ranked recruiting class in 2003-04.
“I?m very excited for Matthew to have this opportunity to move into a head coaching position,? DeMoss said. ?I think it says a lot about what he has contributed to our program over the last two years. He was an integral part of our success. I hate to see him go but I?m excited for him because I know that being a head coach is a goal he?s had for long time.?
