LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky track and field squads finished racing before the rain hit at the Eastern Kentucky Open in Richmond, Ky., Friday night. The final two events were cancelled due to inclement weather. UK Freshman Lavera Morris led the Wildcats, crossing the finish line in first, with a regional qualifying time of 2:09.80 in the women?s 800-meters. Morris led a Kentucky sweep of the women?s 800-meters with her season-best mark.
Several UK athletes claimed additional top honors, including sophomore Jackie Gordon, who finished second to Morris in the women?s 800-meters. Gordon ran a personal-best time of 2:10.31, while senior Brooke Patterson and sophomore Georganne Way took third and fourth respectively. Patterson finished with a time of 2:10.32 and Way recorded a time of 2:12.11. In the women?s 1,500-meters senior Ali Grace tallied another first-place finish with a time of 4:33.18.
The women?s field events squad took first and second in the javelin throw, both recording season-best throws. Freshman Lauren Abney took top honors with a toss of 129-11, while Kathleen Biondi claimed second with a personal-best throw of 122-08.
On the men?s side freshman standout Michael Mason took first in the high jump with a leap of 6-08. In the 800-meter run Scott Brownlee crossed the finish line with a personal-best time of 1:58.38, while freshman Andre Silva claimed second in the 1,500-meters with a personal-best time of 3:58.90.
A handful of UK field event athletes will compete in San Diego, Calif., Saturday at the Triton Invitational.
