No. 12 Kentucky picked up a pair of non-conference victories Tuesday in its final home matches of the season, blanking Indiana State, 6-0 in the afternoon before ending the day with a 5-1 win over Morehead State at UK?s Boone Tennis Complex.
UK senior All-American Jesse Witten picked up his 11th-consecutive win, defeating Indiana State?s Anton Tsymbalov by a 7-5, 6-4 count. Junior Nate Emge added wins over the Sycamores and Eagles, as did junior Carey Rubin and freshman Nolan Polley.
Junior Alex Hume tallied a straight-set win against Indiana State?s Christopher Eldon but fell to Morehead State?s 116th-ranked Greg Johnstone by a 6-4, 7-5 count. Senior Tigran Martirosyan chipped in a win over Indiana State?s Simon Thornewill, and UK?s Marcus Sundh added a win over Morehead State?s Peter Taylor. Sophomore Matt Allinder scored a straight-set win over Morehead State?s Tomi Simola in the nightcap.
Witten Earns SEC Player of the Week Honor
Jesse Witten parlayed an outstanding week of singles and doubles play into his third career Southeastern Conference Men?s Tennis Player of the Week selection Tuesday. The Naples, Fla., native teamed with Tigran Martirosyan to defeat top-10 doubles opponents from Illinois, Georgia, and Tennessee last week. Witten also went 3-0 in singles play, including a win over Illinois? fifth-ranked Ryler Deheart. He improved to 9-1 in SEC singles play and is a leading candidate for SEC Player of the Year.
