The University of Kentucky men?s golf team posted a final round of 279 today, Mar. 8, to battle back from nine strokes down and claim the team title at the Hyatt Plantation Club Intercollegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico. The No. 19 Wildcats? finished with a team score of 851 (290-282-279), two strokes better than Georgia Southern to take home the hardware for the first time during the fall season.
“This was a great start in the right direction for us,? said head coach Brian Craig. ?We played the last two rounds more like we are capable of playing. I felt like this third tournament we?d be hitting on all cylinders and shooting 15-under-par the last two rounds was certainly indicative of that. I?m really proud of the guys and I think we?ll carry on this momentum to our next tournament during spring break.?
Senior John Holmes fired a third-round 67 to finish at 208 (70-71-67) and second place in the individual standings. Holmes finished just two strokes behind Georgia Southern?s Aaron Price. Senior Brandon Waldrop posted a final round of 72 to finish with a total of 213 (70-71-72) and a tie for fifth place overall. Cale Barr had another stellar round for UK, shooting 73 to finish at even par (216) for the tournament.
Senior Matt Wells played the three-day tourney as an individual and turned in a solid performance. With his third-round 68, he finished third in the individual standings with a total score of 210 (70-72-68).
The Wildcats return to action March 18-20 at the Hall of Fame Invitational in Houston, Texas.
