The Wildcats (14-13, 3-9 Southeastern Conference) look to capture their first road win in league play since defeating the Gamecocks in Columbia last season.
?The road has not been kind to us this year,? UK Coach Mickie DeMoss said. ?South Carolina is coming off a solid win over Alabama Sunday and they have some young but good talent. They have great size and they will be ready to play in their home arena.?
The Cats are the only team in the SEC that regularly starts two or more freshmen and two of UK?s top three scorers are first-year players. Senior guard/forward Sara Potts leads the way with 13.3 points per game, while rookies Sarah Elliott and Samantha Mahoney follow with 10.9 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. Junior forward/center Jennifer Humphrey leads UK with 6.6 rebounds per game, while sophomore point guard Angela Phillips has dished out a team-high 96 assists.
UK looks to snap a five-game losing streak after falling to Mississippi State on Sunday, 71-55. Elliott tallied a team-high 14 points, while freshman guard Chante? Bowman tied her career-high with 12 points.
South Carolina (9-17, 1-11 SEC) is coming off of its first league win after defeating Alabama on Sunday in Columbia, 66-57. Four Gamecocks scored in double figures and USC limited the Crimson Tide to 37.3 percent shooting. Sophomore guard Stacy Booker leads the Gamecocks with 8.1 ppg as leading scorer Lauren Simms (11.8 ppg) will likely miss the game with a sprained right knee. The USC roster has no seniors and features only one upperclassmen in junior Olga Gritsaeva.
Coach Susan Walvius is in her eighth year at the helm of the South Carolina women?s basketball program and her 15th season overall. She has a career head coaching record of 211-216.
This will mark the 34th meeting between the two schools. UK leads the overall series 20-13, but trails 5-9 when the game is played in Columbia. USC has won four of the last five meetings in Columbia, however, the Cats won both meetings last season, including a 75-61 decision in the Colonial Center.
