No. 13 Kentucky utilized a solid doubles and singles effort to make quick work of No. 44 Boise State, defeating the Broncos by a 4-0 count in consolation play Saturday at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago.
At the second doubles position, senior Matt Emery and freshman Marcus Sundh set aside BSU’s Ikaika Jobe and Matias Silva by an 8-2 count. Kentucky clinched the doubles point at the No. 1 slot, as seniors Jesse Witten and Tigran Martirosyan upset the 12th-ranked tandem of Luke Shields and Thomas Schoeck, 8-6.
Junior Alex Hume put on a dominant showing at fifth singles, increasing UK?s lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brent Werbeck. Witten scored his third singles victory in as many days at No. 1 singles, defeating BSU?s Shields, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Nolan Polley closed out the match for the Cats with a 7-6 (7), 6-3 defeat of Boise State?s Eric Roberson.
Kentucky improves to 25-28 at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. UK returns to action next Sunday when the Cats take on Florida Gulf Coast University in Naples, Fla.
