The Kentucky men?s and women?s swimming squads charted six top-five finishes, rewrote five school records and scored three automatic bids to the NCAA championships Friday evening at the Southeastern Conference Swimming Championships in Florida?s O?Connell Center Natatorium.
The Kentucky men?s 200-freestyle relay team of seniors Tim Patrick (St. Louis, Mo.) and Clay Gasparovich (Canton, Ill.) and juniors Daniel Farnham (Mt. Berry, Ga.) and Steven Manley (Dublin, Ireland) automatically qualified for NCAA competition with a second-place time of 1:18.25, beating their old school-record time of 1:19.36 set last November at the Indiana Invitational. UK finished fourth in the event at the 2004 SEC Championships.
Manley also punched his ticket to the 2005 NCAA Championships in an individual event, clocking an automatic-qualifying time of 1:35.16 in the 200 freestyle for fourth place, breaking his own school record set at the 2004 NCAA Championships by four tenths of a second.
Junior Laura Graham (E. Sussex, England) ensured herself a berth in the NCAA championships, turning in a fourth-place time of 1:01.21 in the 100 breaststroke to break her school record set at the 2004 SEC Championships by over a second.
Senior Daniel Cruz (Palm Coast, Fla.) completed the 100 butterfly in 47.35 to break his school-record time of 47.55 set at last November?s Indiana Invitational. Cruz finished seventh in the event a season ago. Senior Jerram Chudleigh (Sydney, Australia) won the consolation final with a time of 47.53. Cruz and Chudleigh each broke the pool record of 47.65.
Senior Jessica Siegele broke her own 100-backstroke school record with a ninth-place time of 54.73 to win the consolation final. Siegele held the previous record time of 54.94 set last fall at the Indiana Invitational. Siegele added a sixth-place 100-butterfly time of 54.00 for the Cats after finishing 10th in the event a year ago.
Freshman Kristian Outinen scored for the Cats with a fifth-place time of 54.98, a season best, in the 100 breaststroke. UK took 21st in this event a year ago and will benefit from Outinen?s presence Saturday in the 200 breaststroke.
The UK men and women each remain in fourth place going into the final day of competition. Day four features the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 1650 freestyle and the 400-freestyle relay.
