Dewalt Named National Special Teams Player of the Year in Fan Poll: Lonnell Dewalt, Kentucky wide receiver and kick blocker extraordinaire, has been named National Special Teams Player of the Year in a fan poll conducted by the ?Peoples National Championship.?

Dewalt a freshman from Bowling Green, Ky., blocked seven kicks during the 2004 season, including six field goals and an extra point. The NCAA does not have records for single-season kick blocks, but is conducting research to begin establishing records in that area.

Eight Football Wildcats Named to Society of Character: Eight football players were among the 32 University of Kentucky student-athletes who were recently named to the Frank G. Ham Society of Character.

The Society of Character, sponsored by UK Athletics, honors select student-athletes who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, being a role model, and career preparation.

The football Wildcats among the 2004-05 class of inductees includes tailback Arliss Beach (Ashland, Ky.), kicker Taylor Begley (Danville, Ky.), quarterback Shane Boyd (Lexington, Ky.), tight end Jeremiah Drobney (Massillon, Ohio), linebacker Justin Haydock (Louisville, Ky.), nose tackle Lamar Mills (Slidell, La.), strong safety Claude Sagaille (Evanston, Ill.), and linebacker Jon Sumrall (Huntsville, Ala.).

Two additional current Wildcats, inducted in 2003-04, also are members of the Society of Character, wide receiver Tommy Cook (Victoria, Tex.) and cornerback Antoine Huffman (Jonesboro, Ga.).

Coaches Preparing for Spring Practice, Players Working Out: The UK football coaches are preparing for spring practice, which begins March 30. The Wildcats are taking part in strength and conditioning workouts.

Roster Update: Sophomore linebacker Brad Booker and redshirt freshman offensive tackle Eric Klope did not return to UK for the spring semester and sophomore offensive guard Joe Brady has decided to give up playing football, Coach Rich Brooks has announced.

During the 2004 season, Booker played in all 11 games at linebacker and collected 30 tackles. Klope played in nine games, with most of his action coming on special teams. Brady played in one game during the 2004 season.
