CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The Kentucky rifle team rallied from four points down in each players final 20 shots to knock off Xavier, 4621-4614, Saturday afternoon at Cincinnati.
The Wildcats won for the first time in the Spring after falling to Nebraska last week. The 4621 score is the highest for Kentucky since posting a 4635 against NC State in November. Kentucky?s 2307 score on the air rifle course was also a team best since facing the Wolfpack.
?We have a ways to go, but we?re getting close,? said Kentucky head coach Harry Mullins. ?We?re beginning to see the rewards from the hard work we?ve put in practice these past few weeks.?
Ray Geyer paced the team with a 581 smallbore score and a 584 air rifle score. Vicki Goss fired a season-high 586 on the smallbore course to lead the Wildcats to a 2314 score.
Shooting as individuals at the meet Chris Boggs shot a personal best 587 air rifle score. The score was the highest for any Wildcat on an air rifle course since the second match of the year. Jeff Hamberg joined Boggs above the 580 plateau by posting a 581.
?We couldn?t scored better today, but we left Boggs off the scoring team,? Mullins said. ?He?s been starting, but we wanted to give some other people an opportunity today. We had three people shoot above 580 today in air rifle. That?s the level we want to get to.?
Kentucky returns to action next Saturday at the Withrow Invitational at Murray, Ky.
