Brittney Potts scored a rare hat trick to lead Ole Miss to a 5-1 victory over Kentucky Friday evening at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The Cats fall to 6-9-1 and 3-5-1 in the SEC.

The opening 20 minutes of the match featured a series of unconverted corner kicks and a sprinkling of missed shots for each team. Ole Miss struck corner kicks in the fifth, 16th and 17th minutes, and Kentucky responded with a failed corner kick in the 13th minute. Ole Miss? Kristal Menard found a seam in the 18th minute, but UK goalkeeper Liz Butler stopped the ensuing shot. The Rebels? Kelly Renie sent a low line drive toward the goal in the 20th minute, though the shot sailed wide right of the goal.

However, Renie dented the net six minutes later with a 13-yard bending line drive into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Rebel lead. Ole Miss struck gold once more one minute later when Brittney Potts struck a 20-yard line drive into the lower left corner of the goal, giving the Rebels a 2-0 lead. Kentucky responded in the 36th minute when freshman Callie Lanphier tallied her fourth goal of the season. Lanphier received the ball just outside of the penalty box and after a couple of touches, Lanphier sent a line drive from 19 yards into left side of the goal to cut the deficit in half.

Ole Miss quickly added to its cushion when Potts added goals in the opening five minutes of the half for a rare hat trick and a 4-1 Rebel lead. Kentucky managed a 69th-minute shot from Danielle Slupski and a 72nd-minute boot from Lanphier but failed to cut into the Rebel margin. The Rebels added a 76th-minute goal from Kristal Menard for the final 5-1 tally.

Kentucky returns to action Sunday against Mississippi State at the UK Soccer Complex.
