LEXINGTON ? Freshman Michael Strong found the back of the net in the 109th minute to give Kentucky a 1-0, double-overtime victory over Alabama A&M on Saturday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
With less than two minutes remaining before the game would have been declared a draw, senior Jamal Shteiwi took the ball as deep as he could go down the left side and served it into a wide open Strong six yards out in front of the goal.
The goal was Strong?s second game winner of the year and his fourth overall. Shteiwi?s assist gave him 22 in his career, which tied the Kentucky school record. He has now scored or assisted on 16 of the team?s 26 goals this year.
Kentucky (9-4-2) dominated much of the game firing 23 total shots, including 12 on goal. The Wildcats also earned 10 corner kicks, but were unable to finish off a goal until late.
?I thought we played very well and were very entertaining,? said Collins. ?We created a lot of chances and we have to finish those. But to credit our guys they stuck at it and Michael finally finished one.?
In the overtimes, Kentucky had a number of near misses, including on a shot by Andrew Alexander that rolled just wide moments before the winner. Jeremy Groves fired a shot inches wide off a free kick late in the first extra session.
However, the best Wildcat chance prior to the goal came from Strong in the 98th minute. He took a feed from Shteiwi near the penalty spot and one-timed it on goal. Alabama A&M goalkeeper Andrew Jjombwe?s stop was a kick save and a beauty to keep the game scoreless.
?The save the goalkeeper made on Michael Strong in that three-pass sequence was unbelievable,? Collins said.
Jjombwe was tremendous throughout making nine saves to keep the Bulldogs in it. His counterpart, Kentucky?s Andy Gruenebaum, made seven saves to record his fifth shutout of the year and his third in five games. It was the 13th straight game the Wildcats have allowed one goal or fewer.
?Our backs, after a tough week of practice, were outstanding,? Collins said. ?All four guys that were back there have played in big games here. They have a lot of experience and that is something we count on. Today they really came together.?
Kentucky returns to action on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Akron. With a win in the contest, the Wildcats would clinch their fourth Mid-America Conference title in five years.
