The University of Kentucky men?s tennis squad begins its fall season at a pair of sites Friday afternoon. UK will play host to the Charles Fluitt Invitational Friday through Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex, and three Wildcats will head south to the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga.
Senior Jesse Witten will make his fall debut at the Fluitt Invitational after a sterling summer on the USTA pro circuit. The three-time All-American from Naples, Fla., won a futures event in Joplin, Mo., and finished as the runner-up at a futures event in Peoria, Ill., and the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships in Lexington. Witten enters the fall season with a No. 3 men?s singles ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Joining the six Wildcats at the Fluitt Invitational are teams from Indiana State, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Bellarmine, Southern Illinois and Indiana University-Southeast. UK senior Tigran Martirosyan and juniors Nate Emge and Alex Hume begin competition today in the Southern Intercollegiates at the University of Georgia. Martirosyan enters the fall with a No. 53 ITA men?s singles ranking, while Emge comes in at No. 119. Martirosyan and Emge are beginning their second seasons as Wildcats after transferring from Loyola Marymount and Penn State, respectively.
