University of Kentucky?s women?s golf team took a 12th place finish at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic held in Hanahan, S.C., Monday and Tuesday. Freshman Beth Felts led the Cats in her college debut, tying for 32nd, shooting a 227 (74-79-74).

?We are really proud of Beth, she had a good tournament,? UK coach Stephanie Barker said. ?She struggled during the second round with a string of a few tough holes but for her first college tournament we are really proud of her, she definitely held her own.?

Wildcats firing lower rounds in the second day of play, included sophomore Emily Culbertson and junior Chapin Hoskins. Culbertson improved her finish by twelve places from day one to tie for 45th, shooting a 231 (79-78-74). Hoskins also moved up in the standings, finishing 63rd (77-82-77), for third on the team. Freshman Elizabeth Dotson fired a 237 (76-80-81) and junior Laura Clemmons carded a 238 (75-80-83).

?We are playing solid, but the second round of 36 holes everyone had four or five bad holes that cost us,? Barker said. ?We want to finish higher but we are proud of the way everyone played.?

Team champion, LSU beat out yesterday?s leader Tennessee to clench the team title, carding a nine-over par for the tournament. Virginia?s Rachel Smith came from behind to upset Friday?s leader Violeta Retamoza from Tennessee, firing a third round tournament-low 68 for four under. The Cats next showing is Oct. 1-3 when Kentucky will host its home opener, the UK Wildcat Fall Invitational. The tournament will be held at the University Club of Kentucky with an 11-team field. Play begins at 9 a.m. on Oct. 1-2 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 3.
