On Saturday, September 11, the Kentucky gymnastics team ran in the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure. The 5k race ran by over 4,000 people in downtown Lexington, Ky. to help fight breast cancer. The race started at Lexington’s Phoenix Park, with the start line located on Main St. and the race concluded on Vine St.

The theme for this year’s race, “Heroes & Survivors” marked the day by honoring not only breast cancer survivors but also the firefighters, police officers and other day-to-day heroes who make our lives so special.

The Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. The Foundation is an international organization with a network of volunteers working through Affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure events, fighting to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. The Komen Race for the Cure? has become the largest series of 5K runs in the nation, held in 112 cities across the country.
