A solid summer for UK senior Jesse Witten continues this week with a quarterfinal berth in the Fifth Third Bank Tennis Championships at UK?s Boone Tennis Complex.
Witten, a Naples, Fla., native and three-time All-SEC and All-America selection, began his stint at the Fifth Third with a 6-2, 6-1 opening-round victory over Trent Aaron. Witten returned to the court Thursday to score an upset of fifth-seeded Uros Vico of Italy by a 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3 count. Witten advances to Friday?s quarterfinal round where he?ll meet unseeded Harsh Mankad, who defeated the tournament?s top seed, American Paul Goldstein, in the round of 16. The match is set for 7 p.m. ET at the Boone Tennis Complex. Admission is $8.
Witten earned a wild-card berth into the field by way of his selection to the USA Tennis Collegiate Team, a program that affords top American college tennis players opportunities to compete in the USTA professional circuit. Witten immediately took advantage of the selection by winning the Great Barrier Reef Men?s $10,000 Futures event last week in Joplin, Mo., defeating four seeded players along the way. Witten took second in a futures event in Peoria, Ill., during the preceding week.
