Former UK swimmer Rachel Komisarz has two chances to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team this evening at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials ? Swimming in Long Beach, Calif.
Komisarz, a former six-time All-American for Coach Gary Conelly at Kentucky, swam a second-place semifinal time of 59.03 Wednesday in the 100-meter butterfly event. Komisarz tied with Dana Vollmer for second and trailed first-place finisher Demerae Christianson by .02 seconds. She advances to this evening?s final, set for 8 p.m. EDT. The top finisher earns an automatic bid to the U.S. Olympic team, and the second-place finisher may also earn a bid depending on the number of swimmers qualifying in multiple events later this week.
With a qualifying time in today?s 400-meter freestyle preliminary round, Komisarz would advance to tonight?s final round for a second shot to qualify for an Olympic bid. She enters the preliminary round with a seventh-seeded time of 4:12.04. The preliminary round is set to begin today at 12 p.m. EDT.
