NORMAN, Okla. ? Kentucky junior Matt Wells received honorable mention PING Division I All-America honors announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America, Monday.

?It is unreal to receive recognition like this,? Wells said. ?I never thought I?d be here.?

Wells, whose highest finish in a tournament before the post-season was 11th, finished tied for eighth as an individual in the NCAA Central Region Championships. The Wilmington, N.C., product then caught the attention of the entire collegiate golf community when he posted three consecutive 68 scores in the NCAA Championships and entered the final round of play in third place, just three strokes off the lead. Wells shot a 77 in the final round, but still managed to finish tied for eighth in a memorable tournament.

UK?s John Holmes received First Team PING All-America honors, as announced immediately after the round on Friday, after finishing tied for sixth as an individual.

?I?ve always looked up to John (Holmes) because he is an All-American,? Wells said. ?I thought I could get there it just seemed out of reach at times. I?m still shocked about it.?

Collectively, Wells and Holmes led Kentucky to its highest finish in school history in the NCAA Championships with an eighth place showing.
