Lexington, (Ky.) ? Kentucky seniors Spencer Graeter and Caleb Stewart have been named to the All-Southeastern Conference baseball team by SEBaseball.com. The web site, which is dedicated to covering college baseball in the southeastern portion of the U.S., placed Graeter on the second team and Stewart on the third team.
?This is a great honor for both of these young men as well as for our program,? said UK head coach John Cohen. ?They have both shown tremendous dedication to the University of Kentucky baseball team and are certainly deserving of this recognition.?
Graeter finished the season with a .332 batting average, 67 hits, 11 doubles, four home runs and 32 runs batted in. He led the team in 2004 with 35 walks and his .448 on-base percentage was second-highest on the squad. Graeter started all 54 games this season. The former Kentucky Mr. Baseball from Louisville Ballard High School concluded his four-year career at Kentucky with 233 hits, placing him fourth in school history.
Stewart led the Wildcats this season with 72 this, 50 runs scored, 20 doubles, 10 home runs and 128 total bases. The Rush, Ky., native and former Boyd County High School standout batted .329 and started all 54 games in the outfield. In three seasons with Kentucky, Stewart posted a career .314 average with 19 home runs and 88 runs batted in.
Kentucky finished its first season under head coach John Cohen with a 24-30 mark. The Wildcats showed significant improvement in virtually every offensive category, scoring 89 more runs (372) than in 2003, despite playing two less games (54). The 2004 team batting average (.288) was .15 points higher than a season ago, while posting 16 more hits (537), 35 more doubles (128), eight more triples (13), 14 more home runs (52), 89 more RBI (343), 108 more total bases (846), 72 more walks (239) and 29 more hit by pitches (71).
