Oxford, Miss. ? Ildiko Varga smashed her own school record in the discus throw Saturday at the Southeastern Conference Championships in Oxford, Miss. The senior was one of three UK student-athletes to place in the event with her record toss of 175-02.00. Jeff Chakouian also brought home runner-up honors, launching his best throw of the season in the shot put, 63-04.00, to finish a close second behind Edis Elkasevic of Auburn.
Molly Lonergan and Gennessa Guzman also placed in the women?s discus throw, as Lonergan took sixth with a throw of 164-02.00, while Guzman landed in eighth with a mark of 159-08.00. Freshman Andy Fryman grabbed a seventh-place honor in the shot put (56-11.50), while Kristen Mowrey wrapped up a successful day for the Cats in the field events with a personal-best matching and fifth-place leap in the high jump of 5-08.00.
The UK distance runners again proved to be among the best in the SEC, as Brooke Patterson and Candace Leep advanced to the finals in the women?s 1,500 meters, while Hunter Spencer and Thomas Morgan grabbed a spot in Sunday?s finals on the men?s side of the event. Olubusola Adeagbo will also represent UK Sunday in the 400-meter hurdles, as her time of 1:01.28 was good enough to advance her past the preliminaries today.
