Sara Potts, who just completed her junior year, won the Female Athlete of the Year award at Monday night’s Catspy’s, a spinoff of ESPN’s popular ESPY’s.
Sara Potts entered her junior season averaging 12.1 points and 3.9 rebounds. During the 2003-04 season, Potts greatly improved in almost every aspect of her game. She led the team in points per game with 16.8, including 18.4 in the Southeastern Conference. She was second on the team in rebounding, behind 6-4 SeSe Helm, with 6.5 boards per game. On the year, she shot 78.0 percent from the free throw line compared to her career 66.7 percent. She tied for first in steals with Shambrica Jones, recording 38 each and ranked second in assists behind point guard Angela Phillips with 51.
Potts also broke the school record for most three-pointers made in a game when she knocked down seven trifectas vs. High Point on Jan. 6. For the season, she hit 66 three-pointers, breaking the 16-year old record for three-pointers made by a junior. Jodie Whitaker previously held the record with 48 three-pointers in 1988.
She also became the 24th member of Kentucky?s 1,000-point club vs. Georgia on Feb. 29, becoming just the 10th Wildcat to score 1,000 points before her senior season. She currently ranks 21st on the all-time scoring list with 1, 033 points and could jump to as high as No. 4 on the scoring list.
