UK Women?s Tennis Coach Mark Guilbeau completed his fifth Boston Marathon and 10th overall marathon Monday afternoon, completing the 26.2 mile course from Hopkinton, Mass., to Boston, Mass., in 3:17.05. Guilbeau, 37, was the 1080th person and 1005th man to cross the finish line in the 20,344-runner field.
?I think I really got it done out there today,? Guilbeau said. ?But, I?m feeling a little woozy, and I paid a big price for trying to catch the Kenyans early in the race.?
Timothy Cherigat of Kenya was the first marathon finisher, completing the event in 2:10.37. Christopher Zieman of California, the first American to finish today?s race, clocked a time of 2:25.45. Guilbeau was one of 100 Kentuckians to start the race.
Guilbeau had to look no further than his UK women?s tennis team for strength. A Kentucky lineup of six true freshmen and one NAIA transfer did the improbable and defeated No. 4 Georgia in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals two days ago. The win was Guilbeau?s first over Georgia, where he served as an assistant for five seasons before coming to Lexington.
?I was inspired by our Kentucky women?s tennis team and the work and effort those women have put in all year,? Guilbeau said.
