The No. 21 Kentucky women (15-9, 6-4) close out their regular season Saturday when the Cats travel to Nashville, Tenn., to meet fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (19-2, 9-1). The match is set for 1 p.m. EDT at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center.
The Cats are looking to use Saturday?s match as a stepping stone for next week?s SEC Tournament in Nashville. Depending on this weekend?s results, Kentucky?s SEC Tournament position will range from the fifth seed to the seventh seed. The Vanderbilt lineup will give Kentucky ample preparation for post-season play, as the Commodores feature No. 14 Audra Falk and No. 40 Kelly Schmandt. Aleke Tsoubanos teams with Schmandt to solidify the nation?s third-ranked doubles tandem. Falk and Annie Menees come in at No. 39. Vanderbilt has navigated through conference play with only one blemish, a 6-1 loss at No. 2 Florida.
UK junior Aibika Kalsarieva enters the match with a sterling 34-10 overall tally and 16-7 dual-match record in her first year of NCAA tennis. Kalsarieva, who transferred to Kentucky from Lewis & Clark State of the NAIA, ascended to the No. 19 slot in the latest ITA women?s singles rankings. Freshman Sarah Foster, a Lexington Christian Academy product, has turned in a banner first season as a Wildcat. Foster has won 10 of her last 11 matches and jumped over 30 spots to the ITA No. 64 slot. Foster and Kalsarieva now own the ITA No. 13 doubles ranking.
