No. 22 Kentucky swept the doubles competition but dropped four of six singles matches, falling to 10th-ranked Georgia by a 4-3 count Friday evening at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Senior Rahim Esmail and junior Jesse Witten continued their hot streak at No. 1 doubles, upsetting the fifth-ranked tandem of Bo Hodge and John Isner by a 8-6 count. Sophomore Nate Emge and junior Tigran Martirosyan clinched the Kentucky doubles point with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 over Ricardo Gonzalez and Matic Omerzel.
The Dogs tied the tally at No. 4 singles, as Strahinja Bobusic scored a straight-set victory over UK freshman Jason Mallaiah. Witten continued his superb singles play, defeating the 15th-ranked Hodge by a 6-4, 6-4 count. UGA rebounded at No. 4 when Omerzel posted a straight-set victory over UK?s Emge.
Junior Tigran Martirosyan won his 10th-consecutive match, turning in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Matias Ormaza to give the Cats a 3-2 lead. However, the Dogs captured the final two matches at the two and six positions to claim the victory.
Kentucky falls to 14-6 and 4-3 in the conference. The Cats will look for a split of their weekend road trip Sunday when Kentucky meets Tennessee in Knoxville.
