The Southeastern Conference selected UK junior Jesse Witten as its Player of the Week Monday after another solid weekend performance on the hardcourts.
Witten, a Naples, Fla., native, has a 10-match unbeaten streak and scored a pair of weekend victories over ranked opponents. Witten turned away LSU?s 58th-ranked Ken Skupski, the previous SEC Player of the Week, on Friday by a 6-2, 6-0 count before defeating Arkansas? eighth-ranked Adrians Zguns, 6-4, 6-4, on Sunday. Witten has defeated eight ranked opponents during his unbeaten streak, including a straight-set victory last month over the top-ranked player in collegiate tennis, Benedikt Dorsch of Baylor. He has won 16 of his last 17 sets and has not surrendered a set in his last three matches.
Witten, the 2002 NCAA Men?s Singles Runner-Up, is a two-time All-SEC and Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America selection.
