Auburn, (Ala.) ? J.T. Williamson singled to right field with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as No. 7/10 Auburn defeated Kentucky, 3-2, on Sunday at Plainsman Park. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 14-6 (2-1 SEC) on the season. Auburn improved to 17-5 (2-1).
Auburn started the scoring in the bottom of the first when Sean Gamble led off with a triple and scored on a ground out. Clete Thomas and Chuck Jeroloman singled in the inning with two outs, but UK starter Craig Snipp stranded them by striking out Josh Sullivan to end the inning.
John Shelby?s second home run of the season, a long blast over the wall in center field, tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Jeroloman doubled and scored on Sullivan?s single. Caleb Stewart answered for Kentucky in the top of the seventh, sending a drive over the center field wall to knot the score at 2-2. The home run was the sixth of the season for Stewart, who earlier in the game had doubled to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.
Auburn had runners on first and second base with two outs in the ninth, but James Rodriquez came on for the Cats to strike out Josh Bell and send the game to the 10th inning.
?This is a tough game to lose, but that?s part of baseball,? UK head coach John Cohen said. ?We know we?re going to hit some bumps in the road, but we want to hit those bumps at 100 miles per hour and keep going. We?ll come back and be ready to play on Wednesday.?
Stewart was 3-for-5 to lead the Kentucky offense. Billy Grace finished 2-for-3. Snipp was solid, throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing two earned runs on nine hits.
Kentucky returns to the field on Wednesday as it plays host to the Marshall Thundering Herd. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (ET) from Cliff Hagan Stadium. The Wildcats will then return to SEC play, welcoming the Florida Gators to Lexington.
