Auburn, (Ala.) ? Solid Kentucky pitching was the story for the second consecutive day as the Wildcats defeated the No. 7/10 Auburn Tigers, 4-3, on Saturday in Auburn. Starter Seth Stanley (5-0) limited the Tigers to one unearned run on four hits over five innings to pick up his team-leading fifth win of the season. Matt Scott came on in relief to work the final four innings, giving Auburn two runs, one earned, on six hits to earn his second save.
Kentucky led, 4-2, going into the bottom of the ninth, but Auburn mounted a rally, scoring once and loading the bases with two outs before Scott induced a ground ball from Sean Gamble to end the game.
The win moves Kentucky to 14-5 (2-0 SEC). Auburn fell to 16-5 (0-2 SEC). The Wildcats clench the series, giving them their first road series win in the SEC since the end of the 2000 season.
?We?re really pleased with the effort we got today,? UK head coach John Cohen said. ?We made a lot of mistakes, but no one gave up and we were able to finish the game. We?re really excited to get this win, but understand that we have a long road in front of us and we have to continue to improve.?
Kentucky got the scoring started early, putting a run on the board in the top of the first. Spencer Graeter led off the game with a double off the wall in left center and later scored on a ground-ball double play to give UK a 1-0 lead.
Kentucky went ahead, 2-0, in the top of the fourth when Aaron Edwards walked and later scored on Justin Scutchfield?s single. The Tigers cut it to 2-1 in their half of the fourth, as Clete Thomas singled and scored on a Chuck Jeroloman single.
Scutchfield, Breyman and Graeter all had two hits and drove in a run a piece for the Cats. Scutchfield also scored twice.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a 1:15 p.m. (ET) game from Plainsman Park. Craig Snipp (1-2) will go to the mound for the Wildcats, looking for their first SEC sweep since 2000. All the action can be heard live on 96.1 FM in Lexington.
