Fayetteville, Ark. ? David Freeman and Beth Heimann wrapped up a successful indoor track and field season by earning All-American honors Saturday at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. The duo were honored with the elite status by making the finals of each of their respective events based on their preliminary heats that were ran on Friday.
Heimann, now a three-time All-American, took sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.91. Nicole Cook of Tennessee won the national title in the race by finishing in 2:03.27. Freeman also became a three-time All-American with his 10th-place performance in the mile run. The senior finished the race in 4:18.10, while Sean Jefferson of Indiana won the event in 4:00.16.
Heimann and Freeman joined Jeff Chakouian with top-15 finishes at the national championships. Chakouian took 12th yesterday in the men?s shot put. In addition, Brooke Patterson was named an All-American in the women?s mile on Friday while the women?s distance medley relay squad finished ninth, missing All-American status by just one place.
The SEC was represented well at the meet, as LSU took the overall men?s and women?s titles. The Tigers, who finished with 44.50 points, edged Florida and Arkansas on the men?s side, who tied for second place with 38 points. The women?s race was closer, as LSU overtook the crown from Florida by one point, 52-51. The SEC also took four of the top-six places in the women?s side of the championships, as Tennessee and Georgia also finished among the top teams in the country.
With the conclusion of the indoor season, the Cats will now turn to the outdoor season, which begins next week in Tallahassee, Fla. with the Florida State Relays.
