Lexington, (Ky.) ? Kentucky got great pitching from relievers Jeff Archer and Matt Scott on the way to a 7-6 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday. The win was UK?s first in its own Wildcat Invitational Tournament. The Wildcats now stand at 11-4 on the season while the Penguins fell to 2-5.

Archer (1-0) threw four innings, allowing one unearned run to pick up his first win of the season. Scott came on to work the last three innings, giving up one earned run on two hits to earn his first save. Justin Thomas (2-1) suffered his first loss for YSU.

?We?re really pleased with the effort we got from our relievers today,? UK coach John Cohen said. ?Both Jeff (Archer) and Matt (Scott) threw the ball very well and gave us a great chance to win.?

Youngstown State took an early 2-0 lead, getting to UK starter Craig Snipp for two in the bottom of the first inning. Charles Schulz and Adam Cox both walked and later came around to score on hits by Jim Lipinski and Justin Banks.

Spencer Graeter hit a two-run home run in the top of the second, scoring Jake Kungl and putting UK up, 3-2, after Casey Gilvin had singled earlier in the frame and scored on a fielder?s choice. YSU went back on top at 4-3 in its half of the second, getting two runs on a Cox bases-loaded double. The third runner was cut down at home plate on a great relay from Caleb Stewart to John Shelby to Aaron Edwards at the plate.

After YSU had tacked another run on in the third inning, UK got two in the fourth to knot the score at 5-5. Michael Bertram singled and Jake Kungl reached on a fielder?s choice. Both scored as wildness struck Youngstown starter Justin Thomas, who walked the next three batters to force in the two runs.

Kentucky took a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning when Kungl singled to score Edwards and Shelby who had both reached base on balls.

Michigan defeated Dayton, 8-6, in game one of the tournament, which continues on Saturday with Youngstown State and Dayton playing at 12 p.m. (ET) followed by Michigan and Kentucky at 3:30 p.m.
