LEXINGTON, Ky. ? The University of Kentucky gymnastics program will pay tribute to its 2004 senior class when the Wildcats play host to Ball State, Mar. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Coliseum. Gymnasts Julie Joy and Aronda Primault, along with student manager Gina Augspurger will be recognized for their accomplishments in a ceremony before the meet.
Joy competed in the All-Around for the first time this season and turned in a 39.200 All-Around performance against Florida last weekend. Primault was the Wildcats? top All-Around performer before a knee injury prematurely ended her career two weeks ago in Baton Rouge, La., and Augspurger has served as student manager for the past three seasons after joining the team as a walk-on in 2001.
?We have three outstanding seniors who mean a lot to this program,? Coach ?Mo? Muhammad said. ?It will be sad to see them go, but I know they will do wonderful things with their lives when they leave the University of Kentucky.?
UK will look to improve its RQS score with hopes of obtaining a post-season berth. Kentucky currently ranks eighth in the Central Region standings and has a 194.325 RQS. Junior All-Around athlete Michelle Gales ranks sixth in the region and would advance to the Central Region Championships even if the Cats fail to make it as a team. Freshman Krystle Cook would qualify for Regionals as an All-Around performer well.
?Our goal is to qualify for Regionals as a team, but if that doesn?t happen we have some great athletes who would represent us well,? Muhammad said.
Ball State comes into the meet with a 192.475 RQS and is led by senior Courtney Vojtasek.
The Wildcats travel to Denton, Texas next weekend for its final regular season competition. The Cats will face Texas Women?s University, Missouri and Pennsylvania in the four team meet.
