Georgia?s Hyleas Fountain set an American Collegiate Record in the indoor pentathlon Friday at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships being held this weekend at the Nutter Field House in Lexington. Fountain?s mark of 4417 in the event surpassed Janet Blomstedt?s previous record of 4235 set in 1997.

Fountain secured the win in the first day of the three-day championships with first-place victories in the 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump events. She finished in the top-four in all five events. Fountain and Chelsea Hammond of South Carolina secured automatic bids to the NCAA Championships with their scores. Hammond took second place with a tally of 4133.

Maurice Smith from Auburn leads the pack through four events in the men?s heptathlon with a 3298 score. The heptathlon will conclude Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run. Blake Sabo and Chris Helwick are in second and third places, respectively, after day one scores of 3153 and 3073.

The SEC Championships will resume on Saturday morning with the women?s weight throw at 10 a.m. Field events will conclude at 2:00 p.m. with the men?s shot put and preliminary events on the track begin at 2:10 with the women?s 60-meter hurdles.
