The 12th-ranked University of Kentucky women?s tennis team earned the doubles point but tallied only one singles victory, suffering a 5-2 loss against No. 36 Indiana Sunday afternoon in Bloomington, Ind. The Cats fall to 8-5 on the season.
Kentucky withstood an early doubles loss at No. 3 to capture the doubles point. Junior Aibika Kalsarieva and freshman Lara Maurer scored an 8-5 win at No. 2 over the 50th-ranked tandem of Martina Grimm and Sarah Batty. The Cats sealed the point as freshmen Sarah Foster and Joelle Schwenk tallied an 8-6 win at No. 1 over the ITA?s 24th-ranked doubles pair, Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran.
The Hoosiers answered with straight-set victories at numbers two and one for a 2-1 IU lead. Maurer scored a straight-set win over IU?s Laura McGaffigan to even the tally at two before Indiana pulled away to the victory with wins in the three remaining matches.
?I would like to give Indiana credit,? UK Coach Mark Guilbeau said. ?This was a close match but Indiana played great tennis today and certainly earned the win. Lara (Maurer) stepped up and played well today and Liis (Sober) did a nice job saving three match points to send her match to a third set, but Indiana was just too much.?
Kentucky returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27 in the conference opener at Mississippi State.
