LEXINGTON ? Ninth-ranked Duke took the doubles point and never looked back, claiming a 6-1 victory over No. 13 Kentucky Saturday evening at UK?s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center. The Cats suffer their first defeat of the season and fall to 5-1.
After Duke earned a win at No. 3 doubles, the Kentucky tandem of freshman Sarah Foster and junior Aibika Kalsarieva turned in an 8-5 upset victory at No. 1 over the fifth-ranked duo of Amanda Johnson and Tory Zawacki. Kentucky freshmen Lara Maurer and Joelle Schwenk made a valiant effort at No. 2 but fell just a little short, dropping a 9-7 decision.
Duke scored victories at the numbers three and one singles positions for a 3-0 lead. Kentucky?s Maurer tallied the lone Wildcat victory at No. 4 singles, a 6-3, 6-4 win over 95th-ranked Julia Smith. Duke?s Saras Arasu earned a win at No. 5 singles to clinch the Blue Devil victory.
