Track & Field

The Kentucky track and field team fared well in the opening day of the indoor season, as Gennessa Guzman set a school record in the weight throw at the Kentucky Invitational on Friday, Jan. 16 at the Nutter Field House. Guzman and four other Cats took home top-10 individual performances on the first night of the two-day event.

Guzman?s toss of 60-11.25 in the 20 lb. weight throw smashed the previous school record set by Aisha Smith (60-09.25) in 2002. The junior finished third in the event on the evening, as Ohio State?s Amarachi Ukaba carried away top honors with a throw of 65-07.75. Andy Fryman made an impressive collegiate debut in the weight throw for the men, as he finished in sixth with a mark of 57-04.25. Rachel Kohler, Kristen Mowrey and Susanne Funken all made it into the top-10 of high jump performances as well.

The Cats swept both relay races of the night, as the women?s and men?s 4 x 800-meter relay teams came in first, and UK?s ?B? men?s relay team finished in third. The women won their competition by more than five seconds, while the men came on strong at the end to edge out Wake Forest by more than eight seconds.

The Cats will continue action tomorrow for the final day of the Kentucky Invitational. The events are set to get underway at 10:30 a.m. with the remaining field events.
