Kentucky junior Daniel Cruz broke an event record Saturday at the Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C. for the second time in as many days, breaking his own Kentucky record in the process. Cruz?s time of 1:44.79 in the 200-yard butterfly event broke the previous 10-year-old Nike Cup event record by nearly two seconds, defeating his closest opponent in Saturday?s event by just under three seconds. Cruz?s time, good for an NCAA ?A? cut, shaves .93 seconds off the Kentucky record he set nine months ago.
Also victorious at the Nike Cup was Laura Graham. The sophomore from E. Essex, England took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:16.96, good for an NCAA ?B? cut. Junior Jessica Siegele and sophomore Brennan Moore turned in solid times in the 200-yard backstroke, placing third and fourth, respectively. Moore also turned in a strong showing in the 1650-yard freestyle event, earning an NCAA ?B? cut with a fourth-place time of 16:49.83. The UK 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Daniel Farnham, junior Tim Patrick, Cruz and sophomore Steven Manley placed second with a time of 3:00.90. The Kentucky men wrap up the Nike Cup finishing fifth in the 10-team field, while the Kentucky women placed sixth.
The Kentucky diving corps enjoyed a productive day two at the Indiana Invitational, as the Wildcats? four female divers took the top four spots in the 17-competitor three-meter event. Sophomore Jessica Thompson placed first with a score of 480.05, while freshmen Kari Retrum, Joey Brown and Jillian Becker took second through fourth. Junior Mario Rodriguez placed second out of 17 in the one-meter event with a score of 271.60. The Cats conclude competition in the three-day event on Sunday afternoon.
