LEXINGTON – For the second time in five days, Kentucky surrendered a game-winner in the second half, as Georgia claimed a 1-0 shutout victory over the Wildcats at the UK Soccer Complex. The loss drops the Cats back to sub-.500 status at 6-7-3, and 4-2-2 in the conference.
Kentucky managed three times more shots-on-goal, six to two, than Georgia, but the Cats could not manage a consistent offensive attack. A Lauren Russell goal off of a first-half corner kick was nullified by a Kentucky foul in the penalty box, comprising Kentucky’s only serious offensive threat of the first half. The Dogs registered only two shots in the first half, as the two teams went into the half scoreless.
Georgia would strike gold in the 60th minute. Andrea Velasco sent a 30-yard free kick from the middle of the pitch into a crowded penalty box. UGA’s Geneil Newbern put a timely head on the ball, tallying the only score of the game. A couple of Kentucky corner kicks rendered fruitless, and the Dogs put away the victory.
Kentucky will look for retribution Sunday in a match full of SEC-title implications when the Cats take on Tennessee. Match time is 2 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
