COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina scored the game-winner with nine minutes remaining in regulation as Kentucky fell to the Gamecocks, 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. The first half saw few scoring opportunities for either squad. Elizabeth Ramsey launched a shot well over the goal in the 11th minute and Erin Witchey’s 19th-minute shot sailed far wide of the goal, accounting for the Cats’ only two shots of the half. Kentucky managed two corner kicks but produced little from each.

In the 54th minute, South Carolina gave Kentucky its first deficit since its Sept. 21 match at Arizona State. South Carolina’s Ashley Williams dribbled through the box and sent a low, dribbling shot from 16 yards out to the left of a diving Liz Butler to put the Gamecocks up, 1-0. But, just as they have done earlier in the season, the Cats came back. Freshman Elisabeth Jones took a well-placed feed from Ramsey and beat goalkeeper Elise Matthews to her right from nine yards out to tie the match.

However, the Gamecocks responded in the 81st minute. Sarah Lentz booted in a loose ball off of a Gamecock corner kick, ultimately giving South Carolina the victory.

Kentucky falls to 6-6-3, 4-1-2 in the conference. The loss concludes the road portion of the conference schedule and ends Kentucky’s unbeaten streak at six matches. The Cats return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 24 against Georgia at the UK Soccer Complex.
